Every watch is powered either by a mechanical movement or a quartz movement. Both can be luxurious, but they work very differently.
Automatic (mechanical) watches
An automatic watch is powered by a spring that winds itself with the movement of your wrist. It has a smooth, sweeping seconds hand and is admired for its craftsmanship. It needs regular servicing, usually every few years, and runs for a limited time when not worn, unless kept on a watch winder.
Quartz watches
A quartz watch is powered by a battery and a vibrating quartz crystal. It is extremely accurate, needs less maintenance (a battery change every few years) and is ready to wear at any time. The seconds hand moves in ticks.
Which one should you choose?
- For craftsmanship and collectibility: automatic.
- For precision and low maintenance: quartz.
Every watch page lists its movement. Browse our watches and read our Rolex guide.
